Neighbors who live right next to the A&M store came home last night to find the cylinder to the dead bolt lock on their door hanging out of the lock. Nothing else was disturbed or out of place. Then Tuesday, when they returned from errands it was yanked out again.
Mohammed the store owner told them he had chased a a big black man with a white teeshirt and blue jeans from the side of their house. He seemed to be checking out the door and windows.
Can everyone please keep an eye out for suspicious people around the store and report them right away?

The A&M Liquor story at 303-307 Harrison had it’s license suspended a week ago for selling liquor to minors. This is the second offense in a year, so authorities gave Mohammed the maximum penalty, which was a 25-day suspension. We all like Mohammed and his sons, and we hope they will realize that these violations are serious. It really isn’t ok to sell alcohol to kids.
While it’s sad to see a neighbor get in trouble. It’s good to know that the laws are being enforced in HarriOak. Ultimately, it will make it better and safer for everyone.

On August 12, Hayward police arrested Raymond Lee Davis Jr., 27, for kidnapping a 15-year-old girl and holding her captive in an apartment on Harrison Street, starting on July 16, 2007.

According to the court records: “The victim said that Davis provided her with hallucinogen drugs and forced her to have sex with unknown male subjects. The victim said that she left Davis’s residence and stayed in a Hayward Area hotel with an associate of Davis’s who she believed was her friend.”
The girl said that during the morning of August 12, Davis and two accomplices located her in Hayward. The girl said she was beaten and forced to leave the hotel. She said that while she was being driven back to Davis’ apartment, he forced her to call her mother. Davis spoke to her mother and demanded that she bring him a computer, a digital music player and money in exchange for the return of the girl.

Oakland police later arrested Davis, along with Scotty Lee Washington Jr., 19, and Robert Gibson, 20.

Whole Foods hasn’t even opened yet and already it’s creating a traffic nightmare on Harrison Street. On Friday, Whole Foods and the city agreed to demonstrate to residents how they planned to unload the 50 trucks that are scheduled to make deliveries every day.

The idea is that the trucks will back into the loading dock on Harrison and then exit, making a left so that they can take 27th Street, which is designed for truck traffic, back to the freeway. It turns out that it’s not easy for a truck to back into the loading dock. It took a manager from the trucking company (a really good driver) two tries.
I’m thrilled that Whole Foods is moving into our neighborhood, but I wish the city had put more thought into the planning process. Early on, residents urged that the store be configured so that trucks could drive in and drive out, without needing to make tricky maneuvers.
There is a better dialogue with the city now, and Claudia Cappio, development director at the Community and Economic Development Agency, has pledged to work with residents to solve the problems that the design has created. She has been meeting the HarriOak/Westlake traffic committee almost on a weekly basis and deserves credit for that. But I suspect we will need more than goodwill and friendly meetings to keep traffic flowing to and from the store.

This guy was intercepted in the backyard of a neighbor who lives on Harrison Street near Whole Foods on August 4. It is the second time he entered the property in the last few months. He has also been seen trying to open the rear window of another property. If you see him, call the police 1-510-777-3333
